Vulcano was called by the Greeks the "island of fire" of the buildings where the weapons of the heroes..

cVolcanic activity on the island impressed many ancient historians: from Xenophanes to Thucydides, from Aristotle to Pliny.
More recently, the island is derived Campis reported that large quantities of timber, alum and sulfur. The mining started in the Roman period, continued until the 'age of the Bourbons. After the fall of this dynasty, in 1860, the northern part of the island was bought by British Stevenson, who built a castle, revived the mines and planted the first vigneti.Egli continued the work of predecessors. He built a mule track that goes into the abyss of the crater, where they were manufactured stone shelters for the workers.
In 1888, the last eruption of the volcano Stevenson persuaded to go and sell everything. The inhabitants of the areas of Mulberry and Piano, farmers and pastoralists, were the last and only remained to form the island's population. The opening of a rudimentary agriculture, mainly based on grapes, revived interest in the beautiful island which is now a favorite with tourists Aeolian archipelago

cThe island has indeed its existence to the merging of some volcanoes of which the largest is off but the Vulcan Pit. The others are Vulcanello (123 m) to the north and the southern Mount Air (500 m) is completely inactive, forming a large plateau formed by lava, tuff and alluvial deposits of Holocene and Monte Saraceno (481 m).

cThe main volcano, west, seems to have formed after the extinction of the southern volcano, lavas with very acidic, created the mount called the Fossa Volcano (or Great Cone Crater or Vulcan), 386 m high, with very steep slopes, north with an extinct crater, called Old Forge. Northwest is a recent flow of obsidian in 1771, called the Pietre Cotte. The active crater is located somewhat shifted to the northwest. Currently, the volcanic activity is given by phenomena solfatara and frequent eruptions, usually explosive

Although the last eruption occurred in 1888 - 1890, the volcano has continued to demonstrate its vitality and still observed different phenomena: geysers, steam jets is on the submarine ridge and the presence of sludge from sulfur appreciated therapeutic properties. On the north continues to issue numerous fumaroles boric acid, ammonium chloride, sulfur, feeding an industrial complex for the production of sulfur. (From wikipedia).
